When people ask where we went on vacation, they look at us with a confused expression. One person asked "You decided on a lake instead of the beach?" I explained to her that we've been to the beach a lot and we wanted woods, seclusion, and a cabin. We considered going north but with the timing we had to work with, we feared the water would still be too cold at the end of June, so we explored highly recommended lakes within driving distance down south. The top result came back as Lake Lure in North Carolina. Everything I read was exactly what we had in mind -- secluded, wooded, a cabin with a bonus treehouse, waterfalls nearby . . . once we found the cabin, we knew it was the place to go, so we booked it.
After booking the cabin we found out that Lake Lure is where much of Dirty Dancing was filmed. Once we visited, we discovered that many other movies were filmed in the area too, like My Fellow Americans, Firestarter, Hunger Games, The Last of the Mohicans . . . the list goes on!
The drive was doable but the last couple of hours are up and down mountains, and when entering the area, you're pretty sure you can hear the faint sounds of a banjo being plucked. . . .
There are not many stores in Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, so it was wise to take our groceries and to have prepared freezer meals in tow. CR and LL are basically one town.
