My Nature Fix

What a weird and somewhat frustrating year with hopes and invested interest not going as planned. Vanessa has had to practice more flexibility than ever before. She worked hard for Stone Lab, filling out an application all on her own, while setting goals to achieve paving her own way to go. I'm sure she will never forget, but she longed for this experience the last couple of years. Her Science teacher seemed to understand her interest and ability and was intentional in preparing her for the trip and counting on her to benefit and share with others about the experience.

The charter bus got to their destination to hop on a ferry to head over to the island, but when they arrived, they were told the ferries would not be able to run for the next 36 hours, and they turned back. As one can imagine, she was incredibly disappointed and upset. She had worked hard and met her goals, with fierce determination and an incredible display of self control. Stone Lab wanted so badly to make it work for them, because they too have a vested interest.

Even so, we found ways to apply her knowledge and to do what Vanessa loves best. We had planned to camp out and canoe, but the weather was not ideal for that either, and flooding prohibited us from canoeing. But we found other ways to spend the majority or our day exploring and feeling adventurous, after spending the evening before in nature with friends.

She is/was able to share these experiences too, applying the knowledge she had been absorbing from ecology studies and even gaining more. I'm thankful I could spend the entire day with her doing these things, observing and learning from her. At the end of it all, she talked about how we would not have made it a point to spend this day if Stone Lab had not been canceled. She worried about my enjoying it all too, asking me to be sure . . . over and over. . . .  Oh Vanessa! It was a beautiful day!Thank you for allowing me to tag along.
